Assumptions

I found this video on YouTube today.  I really enjoyed it and wanted to share.  I think it connects nicely to our recent discussions in class.

African Men. Hollywood Stereotypes.

What's your impression of the video?  What do the makers of the video claim is the source for the assumptions?  Can you think of other sources?

What assumptions did you have about Orthodox and Hassidic Jews before reading The Chosen?  Where did your assumptions come from?

How did the novel help you see these groups in a new way?

  1. I was bit surprised when watching the video because I never thought that anyone from Africa would make a video responding to stereotypes in the Western world. I thought that the video was insightful and it was interesting to see through someone else's point of view. While I was aware that the majority of people in Africa are not violent but rather friendly, I just never expected someone from Africa to make a video regarding this topic. It seems that stereotypes that show Africans as being poor have affected by view, leading me to be so surprised. I also never thought about African people as being hurt by Western stereotypes and I felt that this was good video for me to see, as it changed my perception.

I can connect this YouTube video to The Chosen because prior to reading the novel I made some assumptions regarding the Jewish religion. I live near a Hasidic community and as a child I often marveled at the clothing that I saw and the fact that they seemed isolated from modern society. Also, when I was younger I often wondered why Hasidic mothers would have six young children running around them while pregnant. I remember being particularly shocked by this since I am an only child. Truthfully, I never really knew much about the Hasidism and its religious practices before reading the Chosen. Prior to reading The Chosen, I never really expected a Hasidic Jew to rebel as Danny did in the novel.

The Chosen provided me with a better understanding of both the Hasidic and Orthodox sects and I was able to learn more about religious practices and traditional attire and customs. I no longer stare at the Hasidim in my neighborhood, speculating about the fringes they wear or the yarmulkes on their heads. I am more knowledgeable after reading the novel and as a result, I no longer feel as ignorant as I once was.

  2. ---------The video was very innovating in its incorporation of humor and the truth. It was very interesting how many people (Westerners) think all Africans are like Somalian gang members or drug dealers. I just thought that they were super nerds like Indian math people. It turned out that I was also wrong.
-------- Before reading The Chosen, I thought that Hasidic people were stuck up and arrogant Jews who cared only about their religion and kept to themselves. I had barely known about any of them especially Orthodox Jews. Actually, I just thought that they were one big group of Jews.
--------The novel helped me see how pointless the Jewish sects are in arguing about their religion. All of them should tolerate each other and know that they believe in the same religion and God. They didn’t even win at the end. The novel also showed me how important stereotypes can affect people emotionally, perhaps even enough to start a war.

  3. I thought it was interesting how the same trends occur in Hollywood with Africans being portrayed as the AK-47 slinging type with RPGs and C4s strapped to them. This video shows how people clearly form stereotypes just to make money because movies like Blood Diamond made a lot of money and I couldn't help but wondering if a movie that had the westerner as the bad person and the African as the same person would sell as much in American as the westerner being the good person and the African being the bad person.

  4. I found the video very comical and persuasive. The boys in the video did a good job of persuading me to believe westerners to be foolish for stereotyping Africans like violent and hateful people.

Originally, before reading The Chosen, I thought that all Jews are respectful of all others. A rabbi who runs the Yeshiva near my home told me that one of the biggest mitzvahs is to respect all people, especially your fellow Jew. I never realized that there was such hatred between the Hasidic Jews and Orthodox Jews. I honestly did not know about these sects. I always pictured Jewish people as religious, somewhat religious, and not religious. After reading The Chosen I realized that Jewish people had some dislike among themselves. However, I still strongly believe that oposition between Hasidic Jews and Orthodox Jews does not exist in the modern day.

  5. To start off, I would have never imagined a video like this. This is one of a kind and is unique. Stereotypes are often being ranted about, but this video addresses the problem in an interesting manner and gets the curiosity out of everyone who watches this. With this in mind, this video brings up a good point, "build a future." We can only see the world through hope and connections can we effect a lasting change.

Also, I do find it unfortunate, how all movies are. This is true, the Africans are portrayed as the "bad" guys and people who just kill and assassinate. Hopefully, this will shed some light to the ignorant.

Before reading reading The Chosen, I really didn't know much about Orthodox and Hassidic Jews . When I was little around 9 or 10, I had no idea about differences. I just blindly assumed that if I see a person with the curls (I didn't know the term sidelocks or peyot) he is Jewish. I never considered the "less traditional" types.
Around age 8-12, I had my violin lessons near a region full of Jewish people. I was ignorant about the cultures and always though, "Why are they wearing thick clothes in the summer?" and "Why are they wearing top hats like Abraham Lincoln?"
Looking back, I really have not a bit of an idea of these cultures and their way of life.

After I read the book, I learned a lot more. I had all the vocabulary written down and it did give me a sense of how the cultures were like. I understand how stereotypes may effect an individual and hurt someone physically and mentally. I do feel I can understand and appreciate the religious practices and attire.

  6. I really enjoyed this video and found it very entertaining, yet purposeful. The boys in the video did a great job of addressing the stereotypes of African men in the western world, in a humorous manner.

Before reading The Chosen, i was a bit unsure about the Jewish religion (both Orthodox and Hassidic). I live a few blocks away from a Jewish community, and sometimes i would see families walking together, in black coats, and hats. I didn't really know what to make of them. I assumed that they were very strict about their religion, since they always wore those special outfits. I was also always curious about why they wore those outfits.

After reading The Chosen, i gained a great amount of knowledge about the Jewish religion, and culture. I understand them a lot more now, and no longer need to question the reasons for their practices or attires. I now have a greater understanding, and respect for the Jewish culture and religion.

  7. I was surprised and inspired that these African men made this video to address the issues of stereotypes in Western movies, showing that there is more to these men than the violence and wars that you see on television or read in the newspaper.

Before reading The Chosen i didn't have any assumptions about Hasidic or Orthodox Jews. After reading the book and doing the religious analysis i gained a better understanding and respect of the Jewish religion and its customs.

  8. I have to admit, I have always known about these assumptions made on African men. By watching this video, however, it really pieced everything together for me. I found it quite interesting how the people who were talking about the stereotyping were not angered by it. Instead of being angry, they took the stereotyping as a way to inform people not to stereotype. They were able to get their message across to their viewers in a calm and comical way.

The makers of the video claim that Hollywood movies are creating the stereotypes placed on African men. This I believe are also true, because not all African men are angry, never calm, holding guns, and being the antagonist. Even though movies are for entertainment, they are also used for informing the public, which is why some people might actually think these are the ways African men behave. Hollywood's entertainment will become a negative in this case then. Other sources, where stereotyping may come from, are songs, pictures, and books.

Before reading The Chosen, I always pictured the Jewish people as people who stuck with each other only. In addition, the image I always had was that they wore skull hats, long dark coats, and long strands of hair coming down their sideburns. My assumptions came from friends, pictures, and movies I have watched.

After reading The Chosen, I was surprised to find out that there were also Jews, who consider themselves only as the observers of the religion. In this case, they were able to not wear the proper clothes. Plus they were able to shave off the strands of hair on the side of their heads and their beards. I also learned that Jewish children have a very tight schedule that is based on religious studies or praying. Aside from everything I had already mentioned, I thought that Jewish people were just like any other ordinary people; they just have a different religion.

  9. I found the video entertaining, meaningful, and informative. I did not expect actual Africans to narrate in the video because most stereotype-related videos that I have seen are Westerners narrating/ranting the whole time. I was touched that the men were very comfortable and friendly throughout the entire video about the whole situation. To be honest, before watching the video, I never really noticed those details in the movies I have watched. The more I think about it, the more I see that all those details mentioned in the video are actually very true, so I can understand why the makers would use Hollywood movies as the source for their claim. Another source the makers could use would be certain novels, although that would take a lot more research.
Before reading "The Chosen," I was under the assumption that all Orthodox and Hassidic Jews believed they were better than everyone else, which was why they did not smile often or reply back when I attempted to greet my Jewish neighbors. However, after reading "The Chosen," I feel more connected with my neighbors and I felt like I was wrong to assume so harshly.

  10. After watching this video, I felt very surprised. It was entertaining yet very informative at the same time. Many assumptions are made about Africans being violent and law breakers, but these assumptions as the video maker claimed are from Western movies. Other sources of these assumptions may be gangs, books, or may be just made up by people of other ethnicities to put down Africans in society.

Before reading The Chosen, I didn't even know there were different types of Jews. I assumed this because I had not taken it upon myself to expand my knowledge of Judaism. Before reading The Chosen, I also assumed that all Jews were respectful, not violent, and very religious. These assumptions came from my impressions of other Jews that I know and things I had heard and seen in my travels.

After reading The Chosen, the biggest thing I learned was that there are different sects. I also learned that they have a lot more studying to do than I do and that not all Jews are so religious and that they all aren't as peaceful as I thought. In Book 1, Danny many times says that he wanted to kill Reuven and during the game says that his team was going to kill Reuven's team apikorsim. Danny also deliberately throws the ball at Reuven's face and grins at Reuven when Reuven is hurt. Maybe it's just me, but that is not very non-violent language and action. However, we are all human and have these moments from time to time. As the book progressed, my knowledge of Judaism and its followers expanded greatly.

  11. I found this video very amusing and informative, but very true. I hadn't realized how many times Hollywood has given this image of African men to people in the US that watch these movies. It gives a sense of awareness to what people in Hollywood have done to African men's images. They are all pretty much the same image too, violent, never smiling, shooting machine guns all the time, etc. After watching the video, I was quite ashamed of never taking notice of what Hollywood had done.
The makers of this video claim that the source of these assumptions are due to Hollywood.
Other sources would probably music, books, and even encounters in daily life.
Before reading The Chosen, I had an assumption that all Jewish families were very big. Their physical image was presented to me almost daily, so I wasn't so surprised when I read about the clothing of Jewish people. My assumptions came from what I saw outside, on the train, stores, etc.
The novel didn't really help me see them in a new way. But I realized I felt bad for those who were like Danny, feeling trapped in their religion. I still very much respect their religion and what they celebrate and worship. This book just helped me know more about what goes on in the sects and religion.

  12. After watching the video, I was entertained and surprised of how these men could go talking about stereotypes about themselves without getting angry. They managed to make everyone aware about these stereotypes in a humorous manner. These stereotypes come from Matthew McConaughey movies and other Hollywood movies.

Before reading The Chosen, I always thought that all Jews were very religious and I did not know there were sects.

After reading The Chosen, I now understand more and I respect the Jewish customs and religion more.

  13. I thought it was brilliant of how the guys in the video acknowledged the Western world views of them and they are not ashamed because at the end of the video, they sounded the complete opposite. Before reading, I had a biased that most Jewish people are ego-centric, multi-million dollars rich people, and like what Krystalle said, didn't know that there were different sects of Jews. After reading the book, I sort of have that guilt of how their lifestyle is really rough and struggling, especially Danny.

  14. After watching this video, I can honestly say that I enjoyed it. I liked how the African men acknowledged the views on them, and actually made jakes and were laughing about it. This video made me laugh and cleared up my misconceptions on African men. The makers of this video claim that Hollywood is responsible for the assumptions made when people see them. At this moment, I can only rhink of one other thing that could've given rise to this assumption, and that is the media. The media portrays Africa as a famished place where all people do is shoot gunsand die from hunger and diseases.

Before reading the Chosen, i had some assumptions on Hassidic and Orthodox jews. I thought that they all had big families and that all religious sects wore suits and tzitzits and skull caps. Also, I thought that the only bread they ate was challa, and that they all had accents (whether they be yiddish or hebrew).I think that my assumptions came from seeing jewish people on the street and not really being educated on the culture and sects. Also, being around the media and Hollywood I grew accustomed to many stereotypes that jews were portrayed as.

After reading this novel, my assumptions were cleared up vastly. For one, i learned the difference between the sects and the actuall names of the clothing that they were. I also learned that yiddish was another language that many jews (european) speak. I also learned that jews eat Kosher, but they also eat many american foods such as wonder bread, hot dogs, burgers, andmore, so it is not just traditional jewish food that they eat. i also learned based on Reuvens and Danny's family sizes, that not all jewish families are huge. This is how the book cleared up my assumptions.

  15. This video did very well in showing humor and the truth behind stereotype. I honestly was surprised that people from Africa would make a video about stereotypes about Africans in the Western world. I thought the video was interesting and the video allowed me to other people’s views about a certain stereotype. The makers of the video claimed that the source for assumptions is how people percept a group of people based on a small number of people. Other sources include rumors and trying to make money from movies. I felt that this video did a good job in stressing the problem of stereotype and how people are hurt by it.

Before reading the novel, I made some assumptions about the Jewish religion. There are few Hasidic Jews that live around my neighborhood and the way they dressed (A long black hat and side curls) made me assume how they don’t seem to fit in the modern world with their deep religious faith. Also, I friend my dad’s (who was a Jewish mom) has seven children. It made me wonder why Jewish people would have so many children where an average family had around 2-3 students. I didn’t know that much about the Jewish traditions and practices before reading The Chosen.

The Chosen helped me better understand the Hasidic and Orthodox sects and I learned more about the Jewish religious practices and traditions. After reading The Chosen, I don’t feel that Hasidic Jews don’t fit in the modern world…they are part of the modern world. I know more about the Jewish religion after reading the book so now I don’t feel dumb.

  16. This video is a humorous yet informative source of media, and the African men in this video were surprisingly laughing throughout this video, too. When the African men said, "Machine guns." I was wondering what in the world am I watching. The examples of African stereotypes shown in Hollywood movies was creative and very funny. The filmmakers claim that the source for the assumptions that Africans love machine guns or Africans do not like to smile is from Hollywood or Western movies. Sterotypes similar to the ones discussed in the short clip are from social groups and lack of communication/ interaction between the whole population than the peoples that only you communicate with.

All races and ethnicities have stereotypes of their own. I know one main stereotype for Asians; "All Asians are good at math." Asians are "associated" with math just like Africans are "associated" with machine guns. Just like the Africans in this video, this sterotype is not taken seriously and could be laughed at. But, there are many stereotypical people out there that actually attempt to "downsize" other ethnicities and races which is completely terrible.

I did not really have any bias towards or against the Hasidic and Orthodox Jews throughout my life. I also did not really know much about them except that they were the Jews with the black skullcaps, wore black clothing, had long hair, and had hair around their ear (earlocks). Whenever I saw these people, I always asked myself if they were crazy to wear that in public. These assumptions came from my observations and personal views as a person who is not used to seeing people dressed the way the Hasidic or Orthodox Jews are dressed. My assumptions also came from what my parents had told me to do and not to do.

The Chosen by Chaims Potok actually educates me about the Hasidic and Orthodox Jews. The novel educates me about their beliefs, rituals, daily practices, and religious artifacts or texts. The different sects of the Hasidic Jews shocked me mostly because I thought that the Jews were like a whole community that worked together with no separation. The story also includes some assumptions of its own because Reuven believes that Danny is all traditional and should not sound like an aporkism, but Danny turns out not to be this way.

  17. After watching this video I was actually a bit surprised. I did not expect someone from Africa to discuss anything about stereotypes. This video was humorous and I did find a great deal of enjoyment after watching this video. This video expresses others views on stereotypes. I thought that this video showed a great deal in the problem wit stereotypes and how it effects different people in different ways.

In comparison to Orthodox and Hasidic Jews I really did not have any assumptions about either. the only thing that i would think of when I saw either a Hasidic or Orthodox Jew is I questioned why they would dress the way they did. After viewing their different appearances I wanted to know what caused them to dress that way.

The Chosen did help me, in that I learned about Orthodox and Hasidic Jews and the turmoil that exists between the two groups. Before reading The Chosen I did not know that this existed and didn't know of this problem.

  18. This video was quite humorous, though also confronting the major problem of stereotyping. In western movies, black men are in fact depicted as emotionless, immoral, violent human beings when this is not the case. Because of the the current generation's increased exposure to technology, many people may take these personas indicated in these movies, and stereotype all African Americans that way. Movies are not only the source for stereotyping, but news as well. Whenever one hears that a crime as been committed, or a law broken, that crime is now most likely linked to that person's nationality.
Stereotypes, in general, are usually hurtful, and untrue assumption. Though I know that stereotyping is wrong, I still have stereotypes for different nationalities. These stereotypes mostly come from media, which is a large part a a humans everday life in this time and age. My stereotypes for Hasidic Jews and Orthadox Jews in general were that they were thrifty. I thought Hasidic Jews in particular were extremest, and aloof. Though my stereotypes somewhat stem from media, they also stem from my lack of knowledge and ignorance.
After reading The Chosen I feel that I understand Hasidic and ORthadox Jews more, and I understand that they are human like me, and have the same problems and struggles. Though we may dress differently and have different beliefs, we are all similar on the inside.

  19. After watching the video, I relaized how much bias the American public holds against African America people. Before watching this video, I did not recognize these aspects of stereotypes. Initially, I thought of African American people as poor and dependent of others. However, this short video brought to my attention exactly what Hollywood was doing in all these popular movies watched by millions of Americans.

Before reading The Chosen, I thought of Haisidic and Orthodox Jew as "abnormal". In the middle of the summer, I would always wonder why they wore such thick clothing and hats. Also, I never understood what exactly they did with their hair and beards. However, after reading The Chosen, it felt almost as if someone had opened up a new persepctive for me. I do not see them as I previously have, instead, whenever I saw a triaditional Jew, it reminds me of Rueven and Danny.

The novel gave me an insight to the jewish community. I would probably not have been able to acquire all this information and knowledge about the different jews and their traditions and culture. Although The Chosen revolves around the relationshsip between Rueven and Danny, many details are given away to the reader such as their attire and culture.

  20. I found the video funny, but a little too accurate. The Western World puts many stereotypes on many different people, and these stereotypes are the first thing that comes to mind when meeting new people. The makers of the video proposed that Hollywood Movies are the sources of these assumptions. Although they aren't the right way to greet new people in your head, movies aren't the only source for stereotypes. Personal experiences and books can also manipulate one's perception.

Before reading The Chosen, religious Jews, no matter what set they were from, seemed odd to me. To be honest, the beards, hair locks, and huge hats of the men seemed kind of stupid to me. My assumptions came from myself, because personally, I wouldn't go through so much trouble to express my religion. Yet, this video also showed me there are more to people than what you see on the outside. I actually found it cool that all four men had some important role and stand out from the movies.

After reading The Chosen, I learned a lot more about the Jewish community than I ever could have. The novel gave me some insight on the reasons for the practices and beliefs that I found were weird. I don't think I would have learned as much as I did about Jews if I hadn't read the book.

  21. This video was very comical and entertaining. I never really viewed Africans in such a manner but was able to relate to the creators of the video. As said in class, usually I would see Africans as suffering and oppressed. This video showed me a different but inaccurate and biased view of them which has been portrayed in many American films. The makers of the video claim that the source of such assumptions are Western films. Other sources for these assumptions can be from literature, the media, and from other people with biased emotions and views.
Before reading The Chosen, I had the idea that Hasidic Jews were greatly seperated from Orthodox Jews. These ideas came from that they physically seemed very different and had different ideas of religion. I thought that they would associate with one another but they wouldn't go to the same synagogue or practice religion together. Also, I assumed that they greatly valued their religion in that they physically represented themselves as Jews in clothing and hair-styles (earlocks). Lastly, I saw them as brilliant in math in that, to my knowledge, the Jewish community has been successful in business and the stock market. These assumptions came from the media, my friends, and the fact that Hasidic Jews usually live in Hasidic neighborhoods.
This novel helped me see these groups in a new way. I was able to gain insight on their beliefs, especially the controversial ones. Also, I became more knowledgable about their clothing and hair-style.

  22. When I first began watching the video, I was a bit confused. I didn't really know what to expect but after the men explained that they were giving examples of African people stereotypes found in Hollywood movies I was surprised. The makers of the video claim that the source of the assumption is in Hollywood movies. Other sources could be other sources of media such as magazines, newspaper articles, or photographs shown in the news.

Before reading The Chosen, I thought that Hasidic Jews and Orthodox Jews were both extremely religious but I did not really know the differences between the two. I never really paid close attention to the various customs that each community had.

The novel helped me learn the differences between Orthodox and Hasidic Jews.

  23. My impression of the video was it was really poking fun at the stereotypes that Hollywood had brought into the public eye about Africans. The stereotypes mentioned were that Africans believed that "a day without war is a day not worth living," which is completely opposite from what these African men talking in the video showed. Other possible sources that endorse these stereotypes are large media sources, such as CNN, which usually show bad news or the suffering of African people.
Before I read The Chosen, I thought there would be a huge conflict with bloodshed in this story between Hasidic and secular Jews. This seemed to be supported at the beginning by the death threats that Danny said to Reuven but was disproved. I also thought that the main characters would be incredibly religious up to the point where their lives completely consisted of religious studies. This was again disproved as I saw that Reuven did things outside of religion. This literally means that a book shouldn't be judged by its cover. The novel helped me see that secular and Hasidic Jews, even with their differences, they can get along without completely killing each other.

  24. I thought that the video was really funny and comical yet had a really deep meaning embedded into it.I felt that this video was very inspirational too. The video made me forget my bad grades in school and made me happy, especially at the end when i found out that the men were in the medical.human resources field. This made me proud of them and also made me happy. I think this video should be an eye opener to anyone who stereotypes any race. We are all equal in race and we all belong to one race...the human race. We are all connected...If we can't respect each others differences, we can't respect ourselves. Each human being is an individual regardless of race, religion or culture. No group of people should be defined based on what you may have heard or seen. Life is too short for that kind of ignorance.
The makers of the video say that Hollywood is the source for all these assumptions. Other sources may be the internet and even in literature.
My assumptions on Jews were that they all had curls, and wore skullcaps and black clothing. My assumptions mainly come from the media, television and the internet as that i am use to seeing these images.

  25. - I thought this video was quite interesting. It let us see how the men living in Africa view the Western stereotypes made about them. It was both amusing and thought provoking. The makers of this video say that Hollywood movies are the source of the assumptions. I think another source is the news, as most of the time it only reports about how poor and unfortunate the people of Africa are.

    - I didn't really have a lot of assumptions about Orthodox and Hasidic Jews before reading The Chosen. I sort of assumed they always stuck together because I only ever saw them out with other Hasidic/Orthodox Jews in public. I never really gave much thought to it. I also thought they were probably uncomfortable during the summer wearing long sleeves all the time and whatnot.

    - The novel helped me gain insight to the beliefs of the Jews. I learned more about their beliefs, clothing, etc. It was interesting to learn more about them.

  26. The video was hilariously entertaining, yet meaningful at the core. The makers of the video claim that Hollywood movies are responsible for many of the stereotypes of African men in the West. Although I am aware of racism and stereotyping on the Internet, I was still amazed by the sheer ignorance of the Western world in regards to African men, as I had always assumed that people would know better than to believe Hollywood stereotypes point-blank. I was also impressed by the manner in which the African men in the video described the stereotypes; all of the men get into character of their "evil" Hollywood counterparts almost jokingly. They do not seem to possess ill feelings toward Hollywood directors or actors for the portrayal of African men in media. Instead, the men choose to share their thoughts on the matter through a comical, informative video. Considering the ways the men could have responded, they made a very mature and respectable choice.

Stereotypes are all over the media, schools, and streets; one would be hard-pressed to find an area free of any stereotypes or discrimination. Stereotypes usually go hand-in-hand with racism and sexism from my experience.

Before reading The Chosen, I was only vaguely aware of the existence of Jewish sects. I did not know about possible hostilities between the groups; additionally, I assumed the sects all got along with each other well because the Jewish community appeared tightly knit and closed off from the rest of society. Much like Tony Savo from the book, I also assumed that Jewish people were religious "fanatics" because I would sometimes notice Jews wearing full-length, black garb and skullcaps on a fairly hot day. I always wondered why Jews had earlocks, as well.

Reading The Chosen has increased my awareness about Jewish culture. Now, I understand many Jewish terms and practices that previously sparked confusion in my mind. Furthermore, I have effectively destroyed most of my preexisting stereotypes about Jews. Overall, I am more wary of the way my biases towards religious groups may affect my beliefs.

  27. Frishta A,
After watching the video I was really shocked and I realized the small details that I have never seen before. I never paid close attention to the way the western movies stereotyped African American people. It was an eye opener for me and hopefully for the majority of the public out there. The video was enjoyable and very comical in my opinion. The people in the video all looked very nice people who are educated and know what they are talking about.
I assumed that the people who made the video felt down graded and not valued as people. I also thought they they felt hurt because they were stereotyped to one specific thing they did.

The video makers claim that Hollywood movie makers stereotype African people and place them under a specific label. I think this is true because even if we think about other movies like Cleopatra in the Western Hollywood movies version Cleopatra is portrayed as a white female. I have nothing against that but I do not thing that all Egyptians were white to assume that and for them naturally put a label. Also it seems like a human nature for us to place label on the public but the actions that the movies are doing is like a slap in the face for people like African Americans.

Well when I was small I used to live smack in the middle of the neighborhood where the Orthodox Jews thrived. My assumptions came from what I saw because, people there wore black clothing had ear locks and were very secluded in their own community. I however did not know that there was a Hassidic Jew and an Orthodox and they were not very fond of each other. This is because I saw all of them interact with one another and act like a giant community.

The novel showed me that there were actually hostility with in the secs and people fought. It also showed me that I did not give them enough credit of how loyal they were to their rabbi. I was able to view them as individuals now rather then stereotyping them as one group because I have never had an insight on them. Now more than placing a label on people I am able to see more of what the eye cannot see.

  28. I found this video very informative and slightly entertaining. The way Hollywood portrays African men is highly racist; for example, how they are never smiling, always like violence, etc. However, the reactions of the men in this video aren't what I expected. I laughed when one of them said,"Don't you have a Matthew McConaughey poster in your room?" I thought that they would take it more offensively because the way Africans are portrayed is extremely racist. The source of the assumptions is from America's media. You can see all forms of racism on television and movies. A classic example would be in Family Guy, where Asians, African Americans, and Muslims are poked fun at.

An assumption that I had about Jews was that they were all Russian. The reason for this is because I had an abundance of Russian friends when I was little and they were all Jewish. Every Jewish person I knew was Russian, so this led to my assumption.

The Chosen helped me see Orthodox and Hasidic Jews in a new way. For example, I always thought that all Hasidic Jews had accents, like Reuven had thought. When reading The Chosen, I learned about a lot of their daily routines and the life of Orthodox and Hasidic Jew, which was very useful to me.

  29. After watching this video, I can honestly say that the video was on point about stereotypes. I liked how the African American men acknowledged the views on them and all of the stereotyping yet made an effort to make a joke about it and go past it. Not only are Hollywood movies the start of stereotyping but also because of the current generation's technology and Internet, many people may stereotype all African Americans that way. Stereotyping is everywhere, even on the news. Whenever one hears that a crime as been committed, or a law broken, that crime is now most likely linked to that person's nationality and is everyone in that nationality becomes blamed.

Before reading the Chosen, I had some assumptions on Hassidic and Orthodox Jews. To be honest, I thought that they all had big families and that all religious sects wore suits and tzitzits and skull caps and always wore black. I think that my assumptions came from seeing Jewish people on the street, considering the fact that I do live in Brooklyn. The main reason would be being around the media which made me see stereotyped the way they were portrayed as they are now.

After reading The Chosen, I learned a lot more about the Jewish community than I ever could have. The novel gave me some insight on the reasons for the practices and beliefs that I had no idea they did. I thought most of the Jewish people practiced and wore the same thing and did the same things because of stereotypes. After reading The Chosen however, I now know that they were just stereotypes and assumptions.

  30. I found this video entertaining and eye opening. This is because in movies, African men are shown in two ways. Either violent loving as showed in the video, or starving which is sometimes the truth. In this video it shows that stereotypes completely hinder what we think of them, and that it is definitely not true. The film makers claim that the source of the assumptions is movies made by westerns. Other sources I can think of is the news, since they always twist the truth in some sort of way.
An assumption I made about Jews is that they didn't act like normal people did. For example, it caught me offguard when I heard that they were playing baseball and that they had baseball teams. This is because I pictured them always dressed in their formal clothes and did not realize that they do normal things too.
The Chosen made me realize that this is not the case. They do indeed act like I do, and I found many similarities between myself and Danny and Reuven.

  31. After getting past the fact this is slight racism, I actually enjoyed this video. It reminded me of all the movies and tv shows that portrayed African Americans as so. It also reminded me of stereotypes in movies that aren't American, such as Americans must always be blond or Australians must always be happy-go-lucky.

Before reading The Chosen, I didn't put any thought towards Orthodox or Hasidic Jews. I didn't think there was a difference, that all Jews were the same. This is because I never got to know a Jewish person or bothered to look up infomation on the topic.

The Chosen helped me learn more about Orthodox and Hasidic Jews. Seeing how their they have their differences reminds me of other cultures. I now see these groups as two separate branchs of religion, not just one group of people.

  32. This video was very eloquent, but it was the side-splitting humor that made it compelling to the viewers. In the West, Hollywood movies and their producers may be the ones to onset stereotypes towards Africans, claim the makers of this video. It was a moment of harsh realization, when I discovered the stereotypes and racism present in Hollywood movies. The U.S. government, which is supposedly “against racism,” does not react to this implicit form of racism. In the end, nonetheless, the men in the video displayed remarkable maturity, and a sense of creativity, when they made this video. Many stereotypes are presented in books, magazines, and even casual conversations.

Before reading The Chosen, I had assumed that all Jews, no matter what sect, had large families. I also wondered about their earlocks. Furthermore, I had believed that for all Jews, religion is first priority. I had lived near a synagogue when I was in Columbus, and now, in New York I also live near a synagogue. There are many Jewish men that attend prayers at the synagogue, and the prayers could be heard outside the synagogue. This led me to believe that all Jewish people were religious.

After reading the novel, I gained a newfound respect for the religion. During my readings, I noted the importance of several rituals, customs, and beliefs by Orthodox and Hasidic Jews. Nevertheless, after reading the novel, I feel more cultured and courteous towards and about this abstruse, monotheistic religion.

  33. I really enjoyed watching this video. It was both comical and it makes an excellent point, one that I try to stress often. Hollywood(and the rest of the media)often create bias towards particular races. This makes the American public ignorant to the true nature of people. The makers of the video seem to agree that holly wood causes people to assume Africans are violent. Other sources may include other elements of the Media such as the radio or the internet.
Reading the Chosen helped me understand Hasidic Jews more than I used to. The media made it seem like a Jewish person would not get along with an Egyptian person such as myself because of all the conflicts that the arab world has with the jewish world. Now I am less ignorant of the nature of other people and know not to judge an entire population based on the actions of just a minute portion of it.

  34. “African Men. Hollywood Stereotypes” was a humorous but entertaining video of how Western people would stereotype African men due to famous Hollywood movies. It shocked me that the men in video were so open about the fact that they were stereotyped in the Western world. We depict them as violent and unfriendly people because of these Hollywood movies. They showed examples of them being violent and unfriendly with short clips of them shooting with guns, rocket launchers, and they do not like smiling. However, the African men in these videos are not all violent and unfriendly; rather, they seem to enjoy smiling and are educated. I respect he men in this video for not taking any offense to the stereotypes Hollywood has portrayed of them.
Before reading The Chosen I thought that Orthodox and Hassidic Jews would get along well with one another. I did not think they would have sometime against one another since they were all Jewish. I also assumed that all Jewish people were very religious since I have Jewish neighbors that would wear their skullcaps and black/ dark garments all day.
The Chosen showed me that Hassidic Jews and Orthodox Jews were two completely different groups. It also made me more aware and respectful of Jewish people’s practices and customs. The novel has given me an insight of the Jewish community and I would not have known this and continue to think strangely of my neighbors for always wearing their skullcaps.

  35. What's your impression of the video? What do the makers of the video claim is the source for the assumptions? Can you think of other sources?
-My impressions of the video are that this world is covered in stereotypes and false assumptions. The makers of the video claim that the various stereotypes and Hollywood movies are source for the assumptions. Other sources may be racism, discrimination, and various books.
What assumptions did you have about Orthodox and Hassidic Jews before reading The Chosen? Where did your assumptions come from?
-The assumptions I had about Orthodox and Hasidic Jews before reading The Chosen were that religion was always the first priority, and the Orthodox and Hasidic Jews all had large families with different believes within each sect. My assumptions came from the nearby Jewish neighborhood. I observed that many Jewish people wore their full suit in the unbearable heat, knowing that it was their religion. Also they traveled in large groups, in families. This led me to believe that all Jewish people had large families and religion was first priority.
How did the novel help you see these groups in a new way?
-The novel opened me up to a completely different point of view. The novel presented me many rituals and customs, acknowledging me of their beliefs and the difference in Orthodox and Hasidic Jews. In general, I can see the difference between the two sects of Judaism.

  36. What's your impression of the video? What do the makers of the video claim is the source for the assumptions? Can you think of other sources?
I just thought that the video was entertaining. The makers of the video claim that the source for the assumptions is from Hollywood movies. I can also think of social connections, the radio, and, most definitely, the internet.

What assumptions did you have about Orthodox and Hassidic Jews before reading The Chosen? Where did your assumptions come from?
I didn't have any assumptions about Orthodox and Hasidic Jews before reading The Chosen since I never came in contact with Jewish people who were so religious that I learned about their religion from them. But I didn't really think of the different sects of Judaism. I just thought of the Jewish religion as only one type of religion with no different sects. Not that I should've assumed, really. Since I know many people who are Jewish and I see a lot of Jewish people around the neighborhood and they dressed differently.

How did the novel help you see these groups in a new way?
This novel allowed me to see that Judaism is more than one sect. This novel also allowed me to see that the sects aren't all that similar either. Really, that's it, considering the fact that I didn't assume much before I read the novel, or even after I read the novel.

  37. I was very surpised by this video. The video hihglighted a topic that I rarely paid any attention to, and the themes that were pointed out regarding the depitions of Africans in movies were unbelieveable, in that they were so blantant and sterotypical.
The makers of the video claimed that the source of the assumptions was the media and misguided bias. Another possible source would be a skwed perspective; we always hear of people who are NOT in the situation discussing Africa; if we received the point of view from a person actually situated in Africa, we would not have formed such a bias.

Before reading the chosen, I thought that both of the sects were highly religious, rigid in their thinking, and unshakable in their faith. These assumptions came from prior experience with other Jews, as well as the experiences that I read about from various reading sources.

The novel reinforced some of my theories, while discarding others; it also englightened me to the knowledge that not all Jewss are the same; that there are more specfic sects within the word.

  38. The first time that I watched the video, I found it very true, funny, and meaningful. The youtube video was structured to keep the viewers entertained, while educating us on stereotyping that effect our perception on African men. The video was capable of captivating me every second, and it also made me question, “How can these people be calm while discussing stereotypes that pertain to them?” at the end of the video I respected and admired their maturity, calmness, and comicalness towards stereotyping. The makers of the video claimed that assumptions are most times derived from media, such as Western movies. I agree that assumptions that are made are impacted by media. In the modern time, media is a part of everybody’s life and at most times it is the media’s statement that become part of the metal connection we make. Other sources where assumptions are made is when one lack knowledge in a particular subject or area.
Previously I made several assumptions from facts, rumors, and movies I watched on Orthodox and Hasidic Jews. One assumption was that the Jewish community was very religious, unsocial, and did not mingle with the outside world. I always wondered why Jewish mothers were surrounded by six or more children. I concluded that either they wanted to fill up for the loss of many Jewish lives during the holocaust or they loved to have large families. After reading the chosen, however, my perspective on the Jewish community changed. I realized that not all sects are isolated and religious. The Jews also are able to juggle both education and sports, while studying their religious books.
The novel also showed me that there are differences in the Jewish sects. I also found out that the Hasidic group has instances where the kids are rebellious. But the book lacked some aspects from modern Jewish people. I know from my friends that Jews can be friendly and they are not always in the community, neither are they isolated from the world like the book portrays.

  39. I thought the video was quite entertaining and a bit sad on the inside. This was because I was quite surprised at how right the video was on about African stereotypes in Hollywood. Hollywood exaggerates about the status of Africa. I knew that Africa isn't as rich as many other places, but Hollywood movies make it seem like Africa suffers A LOT and is VERY violent. Also, seeing that people in Africa actually do know about the African stereotypes in Hollywood surprised me. The makers of the video claim that Hollywood movies are the source for these assumptions. Other sources may be ads in the newspaper and the internet.
Before reading The Chosen, I thought that Hasidic and Orthodox Jews were extremely religious people, very obedient, and grumpy. These assumptions came from the Jews that live in my neighborhood. I see them on the train, the library, etc. Whenever I saw them, they were either always reading or carrying a small black book.
The novel helped me see these groups a different way. For example, I thought the Jews were very obedient people. However, Danny's action makes me think differently from that. Reuven and Danny don't seem grumpy, too. After reading the novel, I found Danny and Reuven nice, not grumpy.

  40. I thought the video was very funny and showed the stereotypes in a comical way. They blame the source of the stereotypes from western filmmaking and Hollywood. They re-played scenes from many western movies dealing with African men, and used that to show how the percieved stereotype was wrong.
This was also the case with me for the chosen. I did not know the difference between Hasidic and Orthodox judaism before I read the chosen. Reading this book has given me insight into the Jewish community. Also, I did not realize how heavily some Jews make religion a part of their daily life. Reading a book that deals with Orthodox and Hasidic jews makes me realize how strongly some Jews emphasize religion in their life.

  41. I think the video is quite amusing because the four men in the video are able to joke about the matter on African stereotypes while also being serious on how they are portrayed by the film industry in Hollywood. It is implied that movies made by the film industry with violence and elements of war are the sources for the assumptions. Although these are the sources presented in the video, I also think that newspaper, social media, and multimedia spread news with a bias related to Africa that promotes these stereotypes such as the recently popular “Kony 2012” movement.
Before “The Chosen” I didn’t really think there was a difference between Hassidic Jews and Orthodox Jews. Most of the time when I see a Hassidic Jews in their attire, I thought they were just dressed up for a special occasion but with further research I found out that the they have retained more of the tradition customs than Orthodox Jews. These assumptions probably came to me from simply not knowing their culture. The novel drew a very clear line between these two groups because of how the viewpoint of the Hassidic community on the lesser orthodox Jewish community is portrayed by the events in the baseball game at the beginning of the story.

  42. I thought that this video was entertaining and informing. The makers of this video said that the source of these assumptions of African men came from the west, more particularly Hollywood. I think some other sources might be books, video games, and other people showing their experiences from a group of peoples.

The only assumption I had about Orthodox Jews and Hasidic Jews was that they only differed from the way they dress. My assumption came from me not really paying attention to the different sects within Judaism and from only noticing the way Jews dress.

The chosen showed me that there was more of a difference between the two sects than just dressing differently. It showed me the differences in the way of practicing their religion, to what extent they study their religion and the boundaries of the religion.

  43. I really enjoyed watching the video. It's an entertaining way to teach us that the stereotypes being made about them really do affect them in a negative way. They made it enjoyable and funny, but it was also quite sad. It did touch me in a way that now if I see a movie made by Hollywood with these stereotypes, then I'll think twice about it. They say the assumptions being made about them come from Hollywood. I believe that other assumptions come from racist annoying people who so very much against a certain race that they have to bash on them for being a different skin color.

Before reading The Chosen, I didn't really know the difference between the different sects of Judaism. Being Christian, those were the only sects I knew about. I didn't really have any assumptions of Jewish people, except that I noticed that they all live in a certain area together, but that's just how New York City is. I also noticed that the way SOME Jewish people dress seems "different" to me because it could be very cold or hot, and they still wear the same thing. I didn't know what it was for at first, but now I do know why they dress a certain way.

Growing up, I was mixed around people of Hinduism, Islamic, and Christianity. I didn't really know much about Judaism or Buddhism. Reading the novel helped me understand so much more about the Jewish religion, the different sects, and the tensions between them. I wasn't aware that they had tensions between different sects of the same religion. Quite frankly, I didn't even know different sects existed in Judaism. I can now understand why they dress the way they do, rather awkwardly staring at them if I see them. It has taught me to mature, because now I know so much more and I don't ask myself questions anymore about their religion. The book has helped me massively.

  44. My impression of the video was annoyed and disgusted. Even though the African Americans in this video joke around like this is not a big deal, racism is a serious topic that has sadly taken a place in our world. I believe that the video makers sources are the audience. They assume what people believe are to be what is real and believable.

Before reading The Chosen, I believed that Orthodox and Hassidic Jews were very religious and strong believers. To be completely honest, stereotypes once made me believe that Jews were cheap. I understand this is not true because stereotypes are just classifications of a group of people. These assumptions came from mainly my neighborhood since I live in a heavily populated Jewish neighborhood.

After reading The Chosen, I now see that Jews do not have such a different life from mine. The only difference is how they live their life, but other than that, we share many similarities. We go to school, play sports, and hang out with friends.

  45. I thought the video was pretty cool. When seeing the video's title, didn't expect to see them make fun of the stereotypes. I expected to hear a full-on rant, but when it actually played, I saw that they took a different approach. They made fun of the stereotypes, then went into the reasons, and ideas that people may have of them. Being able to make fun of yourself is an important trait, that everyone needs, and I think that's why I found the video, actually very interesting. they try to depict themselves as calm, and friendly men, who are against stereotypes, yet joke about it, and truly give you anew perspective on how different they have previously been perceived.

The Orthodox Jews, assumed that all Hasidic Jews were cocky, and arrogant. but, Danny, and Reuven's relationship seems to prove otherwise. All of them had beliefs, and assumptions that they were raised to believe about each other, but in the end, this barrier brings them together.

  46. After watching this video, I was quite surprised how the African American men joked about the stereotypes made about them. Rather than being angry at the stereotypes, they were comical. Furthermore, not only was the video humorous, but it was also informative and it confronts a major problem of stereotyping.

In Hollywood Movies, the typical stereotype for African men is holding gun, always being angry, never smiling, and more. Although these stereotypes are not true, people might actually believed those stereotypes when watching the movies. In addition, news are also a source of stereotyping . For example, nationality becomes linked to the person when he/she commits a crime. This shows that stereotyping is everywhere; not only in movies and news

Before reading the Chosen, I thought that all Jewish people always wore skullcaps, dark clothing and had long curls. To be honest, I did not know there were different sects. My assumptions were mostly influenced from seeing Jewish people walking in streets, movies, and pictures.

However, after reading the Chosen, I learned more on the Jewish religion and community. For example, I never knew there were Hasidic and Orthodox Jews. Regardless, Jewish people are just ordinary people except with a different religion.

  47. This you tube video surprised me in the fact that 4 guys who were African were talking about all the stereotypes that people say about black people. Not only were they talking about it but seemed to be mimicking the stereotypes that people say about them. The people who made this video claim that the reason for all the stereotypes come from the media such as movies. The assumptions that I made before reading the Chosen were that Jews were separated into religious and nonreligious groups. I also thought that all Jews got along with each other most of the time. My assumptions come from just seeing people on the streets and from seeing neighborhoods filled with Jews that are helping each other. The all seem to be so friendly and all seem religious since they are wearing like similar clothing. The novel showed me that Jews are separated into many sects. I also learned that not every sect helps each other and that not all Jews wearing certain clothing and that not all Jews followed every religious rule.

  48. This video is awesome. The makers of the video knew how to grab the attention of a lot of people while getting their point across. I’ve seen some of the movies that were featured in the video and I remember that these movies perceived black people as angry muscular soldiers. The reason why the black stereo type has been made stronger is because of western Hollywood films. Hollywood films mad scenes of rampaging black people when in reality, black people are just like any other human beings and have the capacity to show kindness. Other sources that support the stereotype are television shows, comedians, and people who are influenced by this stereotype.

Before reading The Chosen, I had very little knowledge about Jewish people. In my neighborhood there is a very low population of Jewish people so what I knew about Judaism came from school, T.V., and church. To me, Jewish people always wore skullcaps and only the religious ones wore suits. I never fully understood why they wear black colored suits, or what the standards of Kosher food really were. At Central Park during a Jewish holiday, there were a lot of Jewish people hanging out. From this experience I came to realize that Jewish people don’t study all the time and that for the most part, they hang out with the people of their own Jewish community.

The novel taught me a lot about Judaism. I learned that there are different Jewish sects such Orthodox and Hasidic Judaism. I also learned briefly about Kosher laws and that Kosher is a holy way to kill an animal with the least pain possible. Jewish people are constantly studying but also balance their social life with baseball. The guiding questions and the analytical chart allowed me to understand more about Judaism and the customs of common Jewish people.

  49. After watching this video, I thought that the African men who made the video were smart enough to post such a video on-line to allow people to get a very different impression of them than the one Hollywood (I must say, frequently) depicts. Another source for the assumptions that the makers of the video are trying to point out, are the occasional stories that appear on the news regarding some raid or rebellious group in Africa that cause devastation and mass murder to the many places they affect.

i held no sort of assumption towards Hasidim nor Orthodox Judaism (since I am a Jew myself). Though, honestly, I felt slightly at odds with the Hasidim for their strange, dynastic organization, though I admired their traditional values. As for Orthodox Jews, I have absolutely nothing to say that is negative.

This novel only supported what I already knew about Judaism, but after that history that Mr. Malter told Reuven, I learned that Hasidism is much more spiritual than i have previously thought.

When reading the chosen I finally understood the differences between being Orhtodox and Hasidic. Before reading the book, an assumption that I made was that all jews are white and that all Hasids are Russian.

  51. After watching the video, I realized that the makers of this video were 100% correct. These stereotypes of African men still exist today. These men were brave to bluntly make a video and display some of the many stereotypes/assumptions created by Hollywood. In addition, these men were not offended by these assumptions, but rather laughed at these stereotypes because they knew they were most certainly not true. These men were able to take a serious topic, such as stereotypes, and create a comical, insightful video. Another source for these assumptions, may be the press.

In addition, it is truly unbelievable to know that the U.S. represents itself as a country of significant toleration and acceptance, while in the meantime, Hollywood is constantly making films displaying all the many stereotypes that exist in this world. Knowing that these stereotypes are present in film being released, the government does no job to stop these film being released. The public had turned a blind eye towards the fact that stereotypes are in every aspect of our daily lives, and decide to no enforce action to stop it.

Assumptions, I had about Orthodox and Hassidic Jews before reading The Chosen were that all different sect of Judaism, although some more religious then others, respected each other, and felt a certain compassion to each other. I never realized that there had been such strong animosity and loathe between the Orthodox and Hassidic Jews. I have never seen these hatred when I went to the synagogue.

  52. - I thought the video was very interesting to see through another point of view. I liked how they weren't particularly angry. The source for the assumptions is Hollywood. So many people believe Hollywood, it's kind of sad. Another source of assumptions is the press, since people do exaggerate.

    - I didn't really have assumptions about Orthodox and Hassidic Jews. I really didn't know there were different SECTS of Judaism. I thought there were all a bunch of people who got along and loved each other. These assumptions didn't come from anywhere. I just never learned about them.

    - Well I learned there were different sects in Judaism and they all don't agree with each other. Every sect is different and has their own beliefs.

  53. I think the video was interesting, funny, and persuasive. The makers said that Holloywood Movies are the source of the assumptions. T.V. shows are also another example of these assumptions.

Before reading The Chosen, I did not know there was a Hasidic sect. I only knew there was the Orthodox, Reform, and Conservative sect. I also thought they all got along together because they were all Jewish. My assumptions of this friendliness came from what I saw on the streets.

The novel helped me see this problem in a new way by Reuven's description of Hasidic Jews. The tension at the baseball game and hospital also portrayed the tension between Orthodox and Hasidic Jews.

  54. The video was quite informative yet entertaining. I guess this was because it offered another perspective. In addition, before watching the film, I lacked quite an amount of information on Hasidic sects in The Chosen. However, after watching the film, my knowledge ELEVATED quite high.

I used to think that all Jews got along, regardless of being Orthodox or Hasidic. This was probably because I wasn't thinking from the actual mind of a Jew, just a Muslim.

In conclusion, I loved the film. It helped me distinguish the various sects in Judaism.
