(8&9) Book 1 Critical Lens Outline

43 comments:

  1. Questions: Describe the relationship between Danny and Mr. Malter. How does Reuven find out? Why might Potok choose to reveal the relationship this way?

Danny found out that he was hungry for knowledge of non-Jewish learning and books, which he doesn’t have access to in his home. This probably made him feel that he is forbidden to seek non-Hasidic knowledge. This caused Danny to go to the library in his free time to do his own personal research and read anything that was worthwhile. He was afraid to take out an actual library card. Danny came to Mr. Malter, not knowing who he was, in the library and asked him to recommend some books. Danny reads then quickly, and then sits with Mr. Malter and discusses them, and then asks for more. This earned Danny Mr. Malter’s respect because of his desire for learning and his understanding on what he reads. However, they never learn each other’s names. Thy had a teacher/advisor to pupil relationship. Then Mr. Malter finds out that the boy is Reb Suander’s son from the librarian. The two of the run into each other again when they both came to visit Reuven in the hospital. Danny was surprised to find that Reuven’s dad is the man he;s been meeting in the library. Reuven was shocked and surprised that his father knows Danny. Potok chose to reveal the relationship this way to open up one of the conflcts in the story: Danny struggling to choose a life centered on psychology and a life strictly devoted to Hasidism. Also, it is a way to show how Danny trusts Reuven and accepts Reuven as a friend. Danny would never tell anyone about the library, especially since it might get him in trouble with his father unless he trusts that person. When Reuven was shocked to learn that his father knew Danny and when Mr. Malter said that it wasn;t his job to tell Reuven but it was Danny’s wish to tell Reuven, it told the reader that Danny trusts Reuven.

    1. What did you think of Danny during the baseball game? What did you think of him after his visit to Reuven in the hospital?

During the baseball game I think that Danny didn't have his five hour energy and was grouchy. Even though Reuven congratulated him on his hit, Danny insulted him and this caused Reuven to insult him back. This led me to believe that Danny was a bully, however I thought he was very smart because he was able to aim the ball at Reuven that he hit.

After his hospital visit, my view changed on Danny and I thought he was actually a nice person like Shamu at SeaWorld. He was smart and he was a good person. This made me think that he was sincere about making up to Reuven and wanted to be his friend. Later on they were good friends like Starsky and Hutch.

  3. Question: What did you think of Danny during the baseball game? What did you think of him after his visit to Reuvin in the hospital?

Answer: During the baseball game, I thought Danny was annoying and full of himself. I recall thinking he was being quite rude to Reuvin when all Reuvin wanted to do was make polite conversation. I thought he was trying too hard and that he was getting way too into the game. He was like that one kid in gym class who screams at you if you drop the ball. No one likes that kid.
After Danny’s visit to the hospital, I disliked him less. I still thought he was being super annoying during the game, but I understood why more. Apparently he really had to win for his father. I almost pitied Danny. Reuvin was the rude one when Danny visited him at the hospital so I suppose they’re even.

Question: What did you think of Danny during the baseball game? What did you think of him after his visit to Reuven in the hospital?

During the baseball game, I thought that Danny was very pompous and cocky. He was very disrespectful and unsportsmanlike to his opponents (especially Reuven). I believe that because of his religion, he convinced himself that the other sect of Jews was lesser than his "superior" sect, and this allowed him to be very disrespectful.
However, after he visited Reuven in the hospital, I gained some respect for Danny. It takes a great deal of maturity to own up for one's mistakes, and it was evident that a mutual feeling of respect was established.

  5. My Favorite Question: What is the relationship between Danny and Mr. Malter? How does Reuven learn of the relationship? Why might the author have chosen to reveal this relationship to readers and to Reuven in this way?

Danny goes to the library secretly everyday away from his father to read books not relating to the Talmud. Mr. Malter gives him books to read including controversial ones that could go against Danny’s religion. Reuven learns of this relationship when Danny tells him. The author might have chosen to reveal this relationship to readers and to Reuven in this way so that the readers understand how extremely important reading other books than the Talmud is to Danny. This is also why Danny was hoping to keep it secret from his father. Reuven’s father didn’t reveal to Reuven about the library visits.
    Outline:

    Teachers and Friends: Valuable Assets

    I. Intro “It stands true…”
    A. People have been better in life with the help of friends and teachers
    B. Danny is going through intricate and conflicting life so having a friend might be necessary for him.
    C. The Talmud doesn’t necessarily apply to all cases but there are many reasons why it should apply to Danny’s Reuven.
    II. Paragraph 2
    A. A teacher or a friend could guide a person and help him get orientated to be a better person
    B. A friend could offer advice and wisdom that can help a person
    C. “A Greek philosopher said that 2 people who are true friends are like two bodies with one soul” (Potok 74) simile makes me feel …
    III. Paragraph 3
    A. Danny sounds like he’s lost and depressed. “I can’t just walk out on them. I’m a little trapped.” (Potok 81)
    B. “People are not always what they seem to be.” (Potok 74) He may be a Hasid but he has a life.
    C. Danny seems like he’s going through a painful experience when his father doesn’t talk to him. “It is good he has acquired a friend. Just so his friend does not teach him scientific criticism.” (Potok 86)
    IV. Paragraph 4
    A. The Talmud is right in that a person needs a teacher and a friend.
    B. In a way, Reuven was a good friend to Danny because he opened up Danny’s eyes in seeing the world.
    C. Reuven helped Danny cooperate with the silence and endure it.

  6. Question:1 What did you think of Danny during the baseball game? What did you think of him after his visit to the hospital?
My views of Danny Saunders changed from the time period of the baseball game to the time period of his hospital visit. A first, I had the impression that Danny was a cruel bigot. He stated that his team would "kill" the "apikorsim." Also, he intentionally hit Reuven in the eye with a baseball. Later on in the story, during Danny's visit to the hospital, I got a different impression of Danny Saunders. Although I still saw him as a bigot, he seemed patient and regretful to me. After more visits, I got further insight on his life and came to see him as a conflicted person who was bright and, surprisingly, compassionate. My views of Danny Saunders transformed from a cruel bigot to a compassionate and intelligent but conflicted person

  7. Question: What happens to change the relationship between Reuven and Danny? How do the boys feel about each other before and after this event?

What happens to change the relationship between Danny and Reuven is that after Danny injured Reuven in the baseball "war", Danny actually comes to the bedside of Reuven to visit him and give his condolences. This was a symbolic act because Reuven, as we know, thought that he would be the last person on earth to come and visit him because he was a Hasidic first of all and was the person that injured him in the first place.

Before Danny came and visited him in the hospital, Reuven already had some sort of vendetta against Danny. He even says, "I told myself that I didnt like his Hasidic-bred sense of superiority and it would be a pleasure to defeat him and his team..." You can already see that he had a certain dislike for Danny even though he didnt even speak to him.

Before Danny came to visit Reuven in the hospital which was the changing point of their whole relationship, Danny seemed to not like Reuven or just had a distaste for Reuven because he said to him during the baseball game,"I told my team that we're going to kill you apikorsim this afternoon." To call someone that you haven't met and "apikoros" seemed really mean because it sort of questioned their faith as a Jew because the word "apikoros" referred to a sort of Jewish skeptic that denounced the basic teachings of Judaism like the existence of a god itself. Danny even admitted to Reuven that he wanted to kill him when he threw that second curveball to him. This suggests that three was some sort of tension between them.

  8. 1) What did you think of Danny during the baseball game? What did you think of him after his visit to the hospital?
    - I thought Danny was very mean and competitive during the baseball game because he hit the ball with a lot of strength and it injured Reuven. Even if he wanted to win, Danny did not have to hit the ball so hard. After Danny's visit to the hospital, I thought Danny was quite caring. Danny actually seemed really sorry for his actions. Even though Reuven was angry and yelling at him, Danny did not yell back and just kept apologizing.

    Paragraph 4: Conclusion
    - State that the Talmud's idea that teachers and friends are valuable assets.
    - State that Revuen was a good friend to Danny,
    - State that teachers are important because they teach about important life lessons and facts.

  9. Favorite Question: What happens to change their relationship?

During the book, their relationship faces both ups and downs. When Reuven ends up in the hospital because his glasses broke into his eye, Danny decides to visit him. At first, Reuven is skeptical and doesn’t want to see Danny. However, Reuven’s father tells him that he should become friends with Danny, and Reuven does. They begin talking about their personal lives, how they live, and who they are. We learn that Reuven’s mother has died shortly after giving birth to him. We also learn that Reuven’s father wants him to become a mathematician, but Reuven wants to be a rabbi. Danny’s father raises him in silence, and Danny seems troubled by this. It was very interesting to see that the boys instantly clicked. Form the beginning I knew that they would have a long lasting friendship.
However, later on in the book, Reuven’s father becomes very active in the Zionist Movement, which Danny’s father is against. When Danny’s father finds out that Reuven’s father is very active in the movement, he forbids Danny from talking to Reuven. They stop talking for about two years until they finally talk because they end up in the same class in college. During the time they don’t speak, Reuven’s father is very ill and he ends up staying in the hospital for a while. Reuven is very alone at home and spends a lot of time by himself. When they start talking they are very happy and Danny has excelled a lot in his studies of psychology.

-state the final thought of Reuven and Danny's relationship
-state the final thought of Mr. Malter and Reuven's relationship
-explain how these relationships are important in a concluding sentence

  10. 4) Mr.Malter serves as a sort of guide for Danny, making sure Danny doesn't venture into a dark place in his thirst of knowledge by suggesting books for Danny. This is shown when Mr.Malter mentions the story of a man very similar to Danny, named Maimon, who's thirst for knowledge was never ending like Danny's; this thirst for knowledge made Maimon a sort of nomad, as he moved to Berlin joining group of philosophers, but was still not satisfied (page 106). Reuven learns of this relationship when Mr. Malter visits Reuven during one of Danny's visits. Potok may have chosen to reveal the relationship this way to show Danny's main internal conflict, whether or not to be a psychologist or a rabbi.

    1. ----I agree with your logic. Not only that, I believe that a more important reason behind Potok's style was to convey to readers the level of seriousness and significance in Danny's visits to the library. The controversial books that he reads not only goes against his father's wishes, but they go against Danny's whole community and religion. Keeping it secret was probably the best way. Reuven's father didn't even mention these visits to Reuven to keep them a secret.

Question 2: Reuven is the son of David Malter, a hassidic teacher, scholar, writer, and humanitarian. Danny is the son of Reb Saunders, an Orthodox Tzaddik who is widely respected. Reuven and Danny meet for the first time as rivals in a softball game between their yeshiva's teams. That game turns into a spiritual war between the hassidic and orthodox sects. Danny's batting style is to hit the baseball back up the middle of the field. This gives him a reputation of trying to kill pitchers. Angered by not being able to hit Reuven's pitches, Danny hits the ball toward Reuven, shattering his glasses and sending him to the hospital with an injured eye. While recovering from his surgery, Reuven is visited by Danny. Danny apologizes and the two become best friends over time despite the difference between their cultures. From their frindeship, I learned many things. For one, Danny's father, a respected Rabbi, only talked to Danny during religious conversations since Danny was being brought up 'in silence'. I also learned that Danny's deepest wish was to become a psychologist rather than a rabbi as his father wanted. This was crazy since Danny, an Orthodox jew would have to abandon some customs to become a psychologist. I also learned that Reuven, who was expected to become a mathematician, wanted to become a Rabbi. This was unheared of since he was hassidic, and not that religious. I also learned that the only other person who knew of Danny's wishes was Reuven's father, since he helped Danny pick books to read on psychology.

  12. Question Number One: The characters Reuven and Danny both met in the baseball game. They are Jews of different Sects, Hassidic and Orthodox, respectively. We both learn that Reuven's team really want to win the baseball game because Danny's team were supposedly the best.

Intro: Establish that the Talmud urges people to find a teacher and choose a friend.
    Agree or disagree (Agree)
    Body 1: Introduce the chapter
Show that when Reuven was in bed, Danny came back the second day and talked about future careers
Refer back to the quote, explain how this shows of talking to Danny when Reuven is down is a sign of friendship
    Body 2: Introduce the chapter
Show how their different perspectives in Judaism and how Reuven never knew Danny until the baseball game even though they lived in the same neighborhood.
Explain how the Reuven was surprised and interested when Danny talked about his "inherited position" as a rabbi.
Relate back to the quote, show how differences can result to acquaintance and later friendship.
    Conclusion: Restate quote.
Reestablish how friendship can spark by talking and interests in differences.
    For the future.

  13. What did you think of Danny during the baseball game? What did you think of him after his visit to Reuven in the hospital?
    - I thought Danny was a huge prick during the baseball game. I thought he was some snotty kid who could treat everyone badly. Him and Reuven didn't even know each other. Reuven was nice and just made some small talk, but Danny ignored him. On top of that he smashed Reuven's face with a baseball and injured his eye severely. After the hospital visit, I felt bad for Danny. He pretty much had to hate Reuven because of his dad. His life was pretty much planned and dictated by his father.

  16. Question: Describe the relationship between Danny and Mr. Malter. How does Reuven find out? Why might Potok have chosen to reveal their relationships this way? The relationship between Danny and Mr. Malter is a teaching method used by some Jewish people to teach their children. This method is the way of silence. Because Danny did not suffer when he was young, he wanted to show him what suffering was through silence. Therefore, he did not speak to him directly, and only spoke to him about religion. When he did want to speak with him, he spoke to him through Reuven. He found out about this slowly with small details throughout the story, and lastly, through when Mr. Malter's conversation with Danny and him at the end of the story. I think the author chose to reveal their relationship this way to make it more interesting. It also shows the difference in different sects of the Jewish religion, which is very interesting. Even though they follow the same religion, they have completely different beliefs on how people should be raised and different beliefs in politics which is intriguing.

  17. Explain who Reuven and Danny are and how they meet. What do you learn about each character in the novel's opening chapter?

Danny is a Hasidic Jew who lives in Brooklyn, in a community with Orthodox Jews and Russian Hasidic Jews. Reuven is an Orthodox Jew who lives on the same block as Danny. They meet each other during a baseball game against each other. Then when Reuven is hospitalized, they begin to meet each other more often. I learned that both characters are very religious. Danny tells Reuven he does not want to follow his father's path of becoming a rabbi. Reuven wants to be a rabbi, but his father tell him to be a mathematician when he grows up. Both characters read the Talmund and go to Shabbatt together.

Question 1: what did you think of Danny during the baseball game? What did you think of him after his visit to the hospital?

When i was reading The Chosen, I felt that Danny was doing the right thing all along during the game. He didn't intentionally hit the ball into Reuven's face. i believed it was a mere coincidence. i thought the visit at the hospital was the starting/rising action of the story. This was the spark which set off the relationship between Danny and Reuven. Also, i thought it was nice of Danny to go and apologize to Reuven even though it wasn't his fault

  20. 1. What did you think of Danny during the baseball game? What did you think of after his visit to the hospital?
During the baseball game, I disliked Danny Saunders. He seemed nothing but an arrogant, menacing and nasty character. For example, he openly says to Reuven, “We’re going to kill you apikorsim this afternoon (Potok 23).” It’s supposed to be a friendly game of baseball, not a war. Not only does Danny want to kill Reuven, but he almost does. He hits Reuven right in the glasses with the ball, sending him to the hospital. However, my impression of Danny changed after his visit to the hospital. He did not act mean as he did in the baseball field. Like Reuven, I was surprised that Danny apologized and he was feeling miserable for hitting Reuven. He was actually caring and concerned for Reuven.

    1. Danny and Reuven were two kids living in the 1940s. Danny was a Hasidic Jew and Reuven was a Orthodox Jew. Danny and Reuven first met in a baseball game, with much hatred against each other. As Danny admitted, "... I'm not being melodramatic. I really wanted to kill you" (Potok, 67). Danny deliberately hit the baseball straight toward Reuven's eye, causing severe injury and hospitalizing him for days. While Reuven was in the hospital, Danny visited him many times. During the visits, Danny confessed his hateful feelings and apologize, asking to be forgiven. After the second visit, Reuven and Danny became friends and interacted with each other more. I learned that Danny was chosen to become a Rabbi, it was his inherited job to do so as the eldest male offspring in the family of Rabbi. Despite being Hasidic, he did not wish to become a Rabbi, but rather taking an interest in following the career of psychology. Reuven on the other hand wanted to become a Rabbi, which seem ionic in ways. His father understands even though he wanted him to become a mathematics professor.

  23. Question: What did you think of Danny during the baseball game? What did you think of him after his visit to the hospital?
During the baseball game, I saw Danny in a bad light. Danny seemed like a conniving extremest who thought highly of himself. This apparent aspect of his personality was shown especially when Danny tells Reuven "“We’re going to kill you apikorsim", which is both a threat and a condescending comment (apikormism is degrading term meaning a Jew educated in Judaism who denies basic tenets of faith)(Potok 23). My views of Danny changed drastically when he came to visit Reuven, for in doing so, he showed consideration, kindness, maturity and guilt. He explained that he had to make the ball game in essence a "holy war" or else he wouldn't be able to have a baseball team (Potok 13). Danny turned out to be a smart talented boy, who would prove to be a valuable friend.

During the baseball game Danny seemed cocky and rude. He had a sort of "Jock" personality where he was rude to others and was very competitive in the game. However, my feelings towards Danny changed after his visit to the hospital, Danny seemed as he was forced to be the type of guy he is because of the pressure from his father. 26. What did you think of Danny during the baseball game? What did you think of him after his visit to the hospital?
During the baseball game I saw Danny as an evil, malevolent kid, and just overall annoying, he seemed really evil when he said "we will kill you apikorism" (Potok,23) this was an act completely uncalled for, reuven never did anything to him, then when Reuven got hit by the ball in the face, I was pretty sure Danny did it on purpose, but later on when danny visits him at the hospital I realized that he didn't and he actually repented for what he did, and they later on ended up being great friends, so overall my image of him changed drastically.

  27. What did you think of Danny during the baseball game? What did you think of him after his visit to Reuven in the hospital?
-During the baseball game Danny had a very cocky vibe to him. I found him to be annoying and I didn't like him very much. When it was talking about how he kept smiling when he was up at bat it made him seem, again, cocky and that his team was better than Reuven's team. Then, after his visit to the hospital I didn't find him to be as annoying or obnoxious. He was kind to Reuven and talked to him. Him going their in the first place made him seem more caring and courageous and adding on to that was the fact that Reuven snapped at him but Danny came back the next day anyways.

Question: What did you think of Danny during the baseball game? What did you think of him after his visit to the hospital?

During the baseball game, I saw Danny as a harsh serious baseball player. He came off to me as arrogant and aggressive, but talented according to how Davey Cantor thought highly of him and the team (page18). Danny was aggressive because of how he had swung the ball vigorously, with one hitting Reuven on the eye. My perspective of Danny changed when he visited Reuven in the hospital. Because of the way he had spoken to Reuven and how he was not angry even though Reuven was furious at Danny, Daanny was seen as a calm, friendly visitor. He was able to earn Reuven’s trust and showed that he would make be a great friend.

  29. What happened to change the relationship between Reuven and Danny? How do the boys feel about each other before and after the event?

The event that lead to change the relationship between Reuven and Danny was Reuven being hit by glass from his glasses from Danny's hit. Then having to have surgery and spend a week in the hospital. Before this event occurred Danny and Reuven hated each other a lot. Danny calls Reuven and his team apikorsim. He also threatened to kill Reuven. Reuven felt that Danny was an stuck up teenager who had to much pride. He also hates him and tells him to leave when he first visits him at the hospital. After Danny's second visit, Reuven and Danny get along very well and tell each other a lot about themselves.

  30. 1) What did you think of Danny during the baseball game? What did you think of him after his visit to the hospital?

During the game, I thought of Danny as a skilled baseball player. But when the part of the book that told the reader that Danny always aimed for the pitcher, I was appalled. I mean, the idea of being a little competitive makes sense but when you get competitive to an extent where you want to harm someone is too much. After the hospital visit, I saw that Danny is just a kid with problems. Still though, so what? We all have problems. That doesn't give someone the right to want to hurt, much less kill, someone.

  31. Question: What did you think of Danny during the Baseball game? What did you think of him after his visit to Reuven in the hospital?

During the baseball game, I thought Danny was very vicious to the other team and to Reuven. He talked in a very nasty way towards Reuven, and would hit the ball straight towards the pitcher. Danny also grinned maniacally right before injuring Reuven, which was something i found as pretty scary. However, after danny visited Reuven in the hospital, I started thinking that Danny was a misunderstood, complex character, who felt guilt at what he did to Reuven and who needed a friend.

    Outline:

    Intro
State what Reuven's father said about choosing a friend.
Quote "two people who are true freinds are like two bodies with one soul" (74) and state that I disagree.

    Paragraph #1
Friends with the same mind should know about each other, yet Danny and Reuven know very little about each other
Book 1 evidence: dialogue between Reuven and Danny shows that they do not know much about each other.
Book 2 evidence: Reuven learns from his father about the origins of Hasidic Jews and accompanies Danny to temple. this shows that he does not know much about Hasidic Jews.

    Paragraph #2:
Friends who have "the same mind" would not have disagreements with each other because they would be able to see each other's point of view and resolve it.
Evidence: In Book 3, both Danny and Reuven break apart their friendship with no clear sign by the two of reconciling.

Conclusion: sum up of two points

  32. 4. Danny’s relationship with Mr. Malter is very much like a relationship between two friends. Danny and Mr. Malter meet in the library once Danny comes to Mr. Malter and asks for a good book to read.
