    1. Here is the answer to "Analyzing Literature" question 1

Reuven is a secular Jew part of a baseball team and Danny is a hasidic Jew also part of a baseball team. They meet each other at a baseball game. In the opening chapter of the story we learn the characteristic of Danny and Reuven. We see that Reuven is laid back with his religion while Danny is not. We also learn of how much Danny seems to hate Reuven even though they met for about a few minutes.

  2. “The Talmud says that a person should do two things for himself. One is to acquire a teacher. The other is to choose a friend” (Potok 74).
    1.Paragraph 2
a.I definitely support the Talmud’s idea of acquiring a teacher and choosing a friend (Potok 74).
b.A friend has the ability to change a person mentally; a friend is someone who you can trust in your time of need, even when other loved ones do not seem like the right people.
c.A friend is someone who gives the right advice, is a good listener of the thoughts of the other friend, and can sense what his friend senses.
d.Danny, one of the two protagonists in Chaim Potok’s novel The Chosen, realizes that Reuven is his friend and his teacher, when he could not talk to his father.
    2.Paragraph 3
a.Beginning from page 68, the reader gets to realize that Danny is uptight about his upbringing, and does not want to follow in his father’s footsteps to become a rabbi; when Reuven asks Danny, “You mean you wouldn’t become a rabbi if you had a choice?” Danny replies, “I don’t think so… [I’d] Probably [be] a psychologist” (Potok 69).
b.The author introduces a metaphor that very closely relates to Danny’s situation, “I couldn’t imagine what it was like to know that no matter whether my eyes were opened or closed it made no difference, everything was still dark” (Potok 54).
c.This is what Reuven says, the story is told from first person point of view, after he has his eye injury.
d.Reuven’s healing process symbolizes vision in a figurative way, to see oneself, and to see beneath the surface, the heart.
e.Not only that, this metaphor shows the importance of using your senses around your environment to fully understand the world.
f.Reuven is the person that teaches Danny this. Danny was not used to listening because he rarely talked to his father. However, Reuven teaches Danny to appreciate words and gain command of his senses.
    3.Paragraph 4
a.In a way, Reuven was both the teacher and the friend of Danny. In some sense, Reuven went beyond the duty of a friend to help Danny.
b.However, Reuven’s most important lesson to Danny would be to walk the path you prefer.
c.Reuven teaches Danny to be strong. Reb Saunders says that Reuven entered Danny’s life when Danny was about to become a rebel (267), and I completely agree with him.
d.From the beginning of the book, the readers expect Reb Saunders to be ignorant of his son Daniel. Potok displays situational irony at the end of this book to shows that Reb Saunders wanted Danny “to find his soul” (264-7).

    1. My favorite question:
      1. Explain who Reuven and Danny are and how they meet. What do you learn about each character in the novel’s opening chapter?
Reuven is the protagonist of the book and the story is told from his perspective. Reuven is an Orthodox Jew, and he lives with his father in Brooklyn. He abides by the Ten Commandments, and attends a Jewish yeshiva where his father teaches. He is a bright, meticulous boy. He is talented in softball, math, and Talmudic studies. The Chosen is mainly the story of his extensive and, sometimes, intricate friendship with Danny Saunders. As Reuven and Danny display resistance toward adulthood, Reuven considers his understanding of religion and traditions.
The novel’s other protagonist. Danny is the son of Reb Saunders, and according to Hasidic tradition, he must follow in his father’s footsteps to become a rabbi. We later discover that he has a profound interest in psychology. Danny goes to his father’s Hasidic yeshiva; but he reads secular books concerning evolution in secret at the public library with the help of David Malter. Danny faces a dilemma that changes his life. He must choose between following his father’s expectations and his own ideas about how to live his life. Since he must follow his father’s footsteps to become a rabbi, he feels a compulsion to remain within his secluded and conservative Jewish community. Simultaneously, he has a deep desire to study intellectual concepts in the outside world. At the beginning of the novel, Danny is anxious and uncertain about how to deal with his inner desire to rebel against his upbringing. He has a hard time speaking openly, and only after warming up to Reuven does he expose the ineptness of his situation. Danny and Reuven meet at their softball match. This game results in an injury for Reuven; but then again, it is this injury that allows them to meet as friends in the hospital.

  3. Introduction:
-Briefly explain who Reuven and Danny are; ie. Reuven is an Orthodox Jew and Danny is a Hasidic Jew.
-State that Reuven has met Danny during a critical point of Danny's life because of Danny's problems with his father, identity, and the books that he is interested in reading.
-State quote from the Talmud, "If a person comes to apologize for hurting you, you must listen and forgive them."
    -Explain, what the quote means.
-Include a thesis statement that makes a claim that will later be proven in the essay.

    Body Paragraphs:
1st body paragraph: Discuss Danny's unusual relationship with his father and Danny's family life.
Provide evidence of these problems with quotes from the text.
(Be sure to include literary elements and explain how these elements serve as
evidence when supporting the Critical Lens.)
2nd body paragraph: Discuss Reuven's importance as a friend to Danny when Danny tries to find
himself as a person. Explain how he does not want to be a rabbi and
    mention that he reads Darwin.
Support these ideas with quotes and literary elements, which can be explained
in regards to the Critical Lens.

    Conclusion:
-Wrap up main points made in body paragraphs and tie these ideas back to the Critical Lens, including any extra quotes or literary elements if needed.
    - Briefly connect the Critical Lens to real life by stating whether you agree or disagree with the Talmud's quote.

    1. 3. What is the relationship between Danny and Mr. Malter? How does Reuven learn of the relationship? Why might the author have chosen to reveal this relationship to readers and Reuven in this way?

Even before Danny and Reuven officially met after the softball game, Danny had been in contact with Reuven's father - although, he was not aware of this. Danny was a rebellious Hasidic Jew who, against his father's wishes, went to the public library to read books that went against the Jewish religion. Like Danny, Reuven's father, David Malter, went to the library and he would recommend books for Danny to read because he saw that Danny was interested in books outside of the Jewish religion. David Malter recommended books written by Darwin and other notable scientists of the time.

Shortly after Danny and Reuven became friends, the two boys discovered that it was in fact Reuven's father who had been recommending Danny books. The two boys learned of this while at the library as Danny pointed out the man who had been recommending him books. Obviously, Reuven recognized his father immediately and the secret was out.

I believe that the author chose the reveal the relationship between Danny and David Malter to readers and Reuven in this manner to illustrate that despite some notable differences - Danny being Hasidic and all - the two boys are not so different. After all, both boys were taught - even if it is indirectly in Danny's case - by David Malter. The fact that both boys have a relationship with David Malter shows that they have something in common after all.

    1. QUESTION 1 : ANALYZING LITERATURE
      1) Explain who Rueven and Danny are and how they meet. What do you learn about each character in the novel's opening chapter?

Rueven is the narrator and also a traditional orthodox Jew. Danny is not Rueven's friend from the beginning of the novel. Danny is a Haisidic Jew. In the beginning of the novel, Danny and Rueven meet through a baseball game. Their relationship develops as Book 1 continues to the hospital scene.

  6. Introduction
-Do I support the Talmud's teachings? Yes
-What exactly is the Talmud and what does it urge people to do?
(The Talmud says that a person should do two things for himself. One is to acquire a teacher and acquire a friend. (Potok 74))
-To have a friend is to have someone you trust.
Although this is always underestimated, the friendship that is developed between a partner and gives you a person to rely on.
-Friends are thoughtful people who always lend a shoulder in the time of need, loyal about your secrets and caring when hurt.
This is why Reuven's abba states to make Danny Saunders his friend.

    Body
    Friends as Valuable Assets
-“A Greek philosopher said that two people who are true friends are like two bodies with one soul.”
-This shows me although Danny and Reuven are opposite characters but they have the similarities and hardships that they may develop together.
    - By using an literary element, similes, I may sense the similarities between them. The two boys grew up in a Jewish communities, but are not how they are perceived.
    - Example 1: Reuven thought Danny was the typical Hasids he stereotyped as. This is what was "attractive" towards Reuven. He judged people by there background.
    - They want their career to satisfy the father and not there own wishes.
-The two boys may relate to each other and learn from each other.

    Conclusion
-Restate the question and my opinion on it.
    - Even Reb Saunders said that “words distort what a person really feels in his heart,...”
-This provides evidence that what Danny said, in an expressionless and emotional face with the words that came out, do not really reflect his true feelings.
-Feelings are indescribable, may be only shown through movement and a true friendship that Danny and Reuven will have.

    1. My Favorite Question

      4) How does Danny explain his actions at the baseball game? Do you find Danny's explanation acceptable? Would you forgive him if you were Reuven? Why or why not?

Danny explained his actions at the baseball game by first stating he was sorry. He shows his remorse by standing outside of the hospital room for 15 minutes for Reuven to wake up. During the game, Danny seemed obnoxious and mean. He tried to take the ball and deliberately hit it at the other opponent. I believe he just made a mistake and this changed how people perceived of him. If I was Reuven, I would forgive. People say to forgive and to forget, and even the best of us makes mistakes. We all learn, especially as adolescents. Danny became from bratty and selfish to sympathetic.

  7. I. Introduction
    a) “The Talmud says that a person should do two things for himself. One is to acquire a teacher and choose a friend,” Mr. Malter reminded Reuven (The Chosen 74).
    b) I agree with Mr. Malter’s statement.
    c) In agreement, teachers and friends can be very valuable assets.
    d) For example, when Danny Saunders and Reuven Malter become friends they change each other.
    e) Seeing that this might happen, Mr. Malter urges Reuven to make Danny Saunders his friends.
    f) How are Danny and Reuven related to the Talmud’s urgency and valuable assets?
    II. Paragraph 2
    a) Danny Saunders and Reuven Malter start off as two boys that have lived within five blocks of each other, yet neither of them has known about the other’s existence (The Chosen 9).
    b) They have nevered associated with one another because they belong to different sects of Jews.
    c) When they do meet, we discover that Danny has been reading Darwin, which is forbidden by Mr. Saunders, secretly in the library (The Chosen 79).
    d) In addition, Danny tells Reuven that he does not want to become a rabbi, even though he will be forced to become one (The Chosen 81).
    e) Why does Danny tell Reuven, whom he wanted to kill, his secrets?
    III. Paragraph 3
    a) Danny says, “I’ve never told this to anyone before. All the time I kept wondering who I would tell it to one day,” after telling Reuven about how he reads Darwin.
    b) As you can tell by what Danny said, people can build trust with their friends or teachers, like how Danny confided in Reuven a secret that he has never told a single person before.
    c) Trusting in Reuven allowed Danny to stop his “all the time I kept wondering”, which relieved some pressure from himself.
    d) Additionally, both boys are able to learn from each other.
    e) For example, Danny teaches Reuven his family dynasty idea, and Reuven teaches Danny mathematics (The Chosen 81-82).
    f) Therefore, friends and teachers can become valuable assets.
    IV. Conclusion
    a) The Talmud, according to Mr. Malter, tells us to acquire a teacher and choose a friend.
    b) When Danny and Reuven chose each other as friends, they forgot about how different their backgrounds were and became each other’s teacher.
    c) For example, Danny tells Reuven about secretly reading certain books and their importance (The Chosen 79-80)
    d) As each other’s teacher, they were both able to learn, trust, and mold the other’s perspective.
    e) In relevance to Danny and Reuven’s relationship, I can say that I agree with the Talmud, which is that people should choose a friend and obtain a teacher.

What did you think of Danny during the baseball game? What did you think of him after his visit to Reuven in the hospital?
During the baseball game, my thoughts on Danny were that he was a bad boy, mean, and blunt. For example, on page 23, Danny says to Reuven, “I told my team we’re going to kill you apikorism this afternoon,” this just shows he does not want to be friends with Reuven. After Danny’s visits to Reuven in the hospital, my impression of Danny changed drastically. I now thought of Danny as nerdy and obedient, because he listens to his dad and considers secretly reading books a negative thing. I understand that it is against Danny’s religion to read certain books; however from my perspective reading books has always been a positive.

  8. Outline
I.I support several of the ideals that can be found in the Talmud’s teaching.

a.I support the Talmud’s idea when “The Talmud says that a person should do two things for himself. One is to acquire a teacher. The other is to choose a friend” (Potok 74).

i.A teacher is needed, for the obvious reason, to teach. Danny’s teacher is his father rabbi Reb Saunders. Similarly, Reuven has his own father as his educator. Both fathers have a unique way of teaching. Reb questions his son about the Talmud and they spark an argument that they continue for quite a while. “Danny spent his mornings studying Talmud, either alone or with his father…Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday mornings (I) studied the Talmud with my father slowly, patiently, intensively… ten lines daily... Danny, on the other hand (read)…. Three blatt.” (166, lines 7-18). Furthermore, both boys have their fathers as their mentor but they learn at different paces.
ii.Friends are an aspect of necessity. Friends are there to listen and give advices. When Danny was reading secular books he told Reuven about his reading to release his tension and fear by speaking to a person he can trust. When Danny says, “I’ve never said that to anyone before.” (79, line 26). Danny trust in Reuven is revealed after Danny says those words.

II.Reasons why teachers are valuable assets

a.Teachers are needed to educate. In this context of the book the fathers, who are mentors teach both religious and survival lessons.

i.Studying from the Talmud shows the religious aspect being taught.
ii.Another lesson would be silence, Reb treats his son with silence because he believes it helps forms an individual without any corrupted words.

III.Reasons why friends are valuable assets

a.Friends are needed for many reasons.

i.A friend keeps secrets, away from the unwanted ears. Danny wanted to tell someone his future thoughts on pursuing studies in physiology. Reuven keeps this deep secret from Reb Saunders, even though he shares it with his father. “I don’t think so… [I’d] Probably [be] a psychologist” (69).
This quote shows Danny intentions for his future goals.
ii.Friends give advice or courage. Reuven tried his best to persuade Danny to share his secrets with his father. However, Danny does not need to speak because silence has its own way of speaking to Reb.

    IV.Danny Saunders needs a friend.

a.Danny needed a friend from the beginning to share the fact that he reads secular books and has intentions in studying physiology.
b.The major reason why Danny needs a friend is to help him communicate with his silent father.

i.Reuven was the friend and the middle man that spoke to both Reb and Danny. Reuven had to communicate as certain instances. One instance is near the end of the book, the father explains the silence to Reuven, even though the words are meant for Danny.

    1. My favorite response
Question: What did you think of Danny during the baseball game? What did you think of him after his visit to Reuven in the hospital?
I had two very different perspectives of Danny before and after the incident in the hospital. During the baseball game Danny appeared to be a “murderer” because of the way he hits the ball. He hits the baseball directly at the face of the pitcher. With the descriptive language provided by Reuven, I also imagined as a very religious boy with his Tzitzit, skullcap, and earlocks. This point of view, however, changed after Danny visited Reuven in the hospital. This visit displayed the fact that Danny has guts to ask for forgiveness. I believe it is both challenging, to apologize and accept apology in this certain type of circumstance. Danny’s attempt to apologize the second time after being insulted meant he had a great heart and actually regretted his actions. As it can be seen my perspective on Danny changed from malicious to a benevolent person.

The guy who thought he was irresistible, the coolest person on earth and the best at everything. He also had a bad boy aura. He seemed slick, cool, and uncaring of anyone's thoughts on him. After his visit to Reuven in the hospital, my opinion of Danny changed dramatically. We as readers get to see a new side of Danny. His emotions are expressed when he talks to Reuven in the hospital. Danny seemed like an insecure boy who's looking for a friend or a lost puppy looking for its home.

What did you think of Danny during the baseball game? What did you think of him after his visit to Reuven in the hospital?
During the baseball game, I thought of Danny as an over confident person. He acted as if this game wasn't affecting his mood like it was to Reuven. He made it appear as if him and his team were better than everyone else's. Also, when I found out that he was also the son of Reb Saunders, I also wondered if he thought he was better among his own people. On the other hand, I also thought that maybe he was actually a shy person and sympathized him. After he visited Reuven in the hospital, my view of him hadn't changed. His visit to the hospital just confirmed that he wasn't a bad person. Danny seemed to have cared so much about Reuven and started to feel bad for him because he couldn't do what he wanted to be what he wanted around his dad.

      Literary Analysis
      2. I saw that in the beginning that Reuven was very judgmental and he just applied every stereotype he had against Danny. Reuven states to his father that Danny intentionally hit him. He also tells his father that Danny called him an apikorsim. But after he gets to know Danny, the more Rueven changes his opinion on him, he realizes that Danny does not fit his Hasid stereotype and that both have many qualities in common such as a competitive drive and an intellectual passion. Danny however I though was renounced person who did not associate with anyone if it is not necessary. I interpreted this from Reb Saunders because he said that his son needed a soul but possessed an intellectual mind. Danny then later on tells Reuven how he is treated by his father and how much hope his father holds on him to become a Rabbi. Their strong yet different relationships with their fathers bring Danny and Reuven together. Danny wants to become a psychologist, but feels obligated to become a rabbi; whereas Reuven wants to become a rabbi, but feels pressure from his father to be a mathematician.

    1. Favorite Question: What did you think of Danny during the baseball game? What did you think of him after his visit to Reuven in the hospital?

During the baseball game, i really hated Danny. I thought of him as a cruel, cold-hearted, and obnoxious jerk. His actions were very aggressive and hateful toward Reuven, and all the other boys in Reuvens sect. However, after his visit to Reuven in the hospital, my view of Danny drastically changed. I felt that the reason he was so hateful toward Reuven's sect was because he was raised that way. This scene showed Danny's true emotions , and his gentleness, and sincerity.

  17. 4. How does Danny explain his actions at the baseball game? Do you find Danny’s explanation acceptable? Would you forgive him if you were Reuven? Why or why not?
Danny explains his actions at the baseball game as being fueled by his hatred for Reuven. This might be due to the level of orthodoxy regarding their beliefs. Danny was a Hassidic Jew and Reuven was a modern-orthodox Jew so when Danny and his team were constantly slinging around the word “apikorism” at Reuven and his teammates, it made the situation tense and everyone felt hostile towards each other. If I were Reuven though, I would find his explanation acceptable while also forgiving him. The differences between the two are what caused the incident in the first place so why not put them aside and befriend Danny? It would be a great opportunity to allow Danny to make up for what he has done to Reuven.

    I. Introduction

-Talk about how the Talmud brings Danny and Reuven together during the various heated debates

-Danny might meet the criteria of both
-Agree with the quote and explain why I support it

    II. Body Paragraph One
-How does Danny exhibit the qualities of a teacher and friend?
-Is Danny more of a teacher or friend to Reuven?
-When Danny has the heated debates with his father and Reuven he shows the qualities of a teacher because of his ability to interpret the passages of the Talmud and provide his view on them
-How does this quote apply to both Danny and Reuven?

    III. Body Paragraph Two
    - Because Danny and Reuven are friends they pretty much fulfill the second part of the saying, “The other is to choose a friend.”
    - Danny’s teacher is Reb Saunders, his father while Reuven’s teacher is also his father.
-Describe how both fathers teach their sons in different ways.
-How does this cause conflicts later on in the story?

    IV. Conclusion
-Overall, does this quote stand true and applies itself as one of the themes to the novel?
-Did Danny and Reuven both fulfill the saying throughout the story?
-Reuven and Danny needed each other throughout the story to discover what they both wanted to truly become
-How did their fathers affect them throughout the story?

It can't possibly be that serious. There is alot of judgement that is passed on Conservative Jews by Hasidic Jews, but I still don't find Danny's actions acceptable. So, no I would not forgive Danny, and one apology is NOT going to cut it.

Winning the game meant so much to him, that he would even dare to injure a player. However, my opinion of Danny drastically changed when he visited Reuven at the hospital.
